You Should Get A Fence As A Dog Owner

If you have dogs, then you should also have a fence around your home. This is especially true if you have larger dogs. The reason for this is because larger dogs are more difficult to give enough exercise just by taking them out on a leash. Since smaller dogs have to move their legs more to keep up with you, they will often tire faster. However, it is a good idea, in general, to have a fence for any dog so they can be let out to play all around the yard. Also, large dogs can really scare your neighbors if they decide to leave your property and run up to them. Any size of dog will also be at risk of being lost, hurt, or even killed if they runoff from your property. Here are some things to think about in regard to fencing your home for your dog:

The whole area will need to be fully fenced

When you have a fence installed to contain your dog, you will need the fence to be fully enclosed, or else the dog will just find the opening and walk right through it. This is why it is a good idea for you to make sure you get a fence that has a self-closing gate. With a gate that self closes, it will close all the way every time someone enters or exits the yard. If you don't like the idea of having the whole yard fenced in, then you can choose one area and dedicate a portion of the yard to your dog. Another thing you can do is to have a dog run installed that is sized properly in your yard. A dog run doesn't have to take up a lot of your yard, but it should give your dog some room to run around a little and burn off energy, and so they can relieve themselves.

The fence needs to contain the dog

Another thing you want to make sure of is that the fence will contain your dog. This means you want to make sure you have one installed that is tall enough so they can't jump over it. The allowable height for a residence may be regulated by the city or county. Generally, this height ranges from 6 to 8 feet in height. When you are having a fence installed, the fence installation company will be able to determine the allowable height for your area. Keep in mind, even if your dog can jump tall fences, there are coyote rollers you can have installed along the top of the fence so your dog can't jump it.

The type of fence you go with is also important when it comes to containing your dog properly. If you have a small dog, then you may want to go with a wood or chain link fence. Otherwise, there is the chance the dog may be able to fit through the fence. If your dog is medium to large-sized, then any of these types will work well. If you have a very strong dog that you feel may destroy a wood fence, then a chain-link or wrought iron option may be best.
